Together at the Gate

Nina wants one thing on the path: to reach the gate with Omar, not after him. Omar runs fast. He is already near the trees, and he does not look back. Last time, Nina stopped. Omar finished alone, and she walked the last part with nobody to talk to. She does not want that walk again.

She runs. The bag on her shoulder bumps her hip. Her breath gets loud in her ears. The path is flat here, beside the water. There is no hill. Omar is still far ahead. Nina calls his name. He does not turn. She cannot tell if he hears her.

Her side starts to hurt. She puts a hand on it and she slows. Now she is jogging. Her feet still leave the ground, but each step is shorter, and she can hear the water again.
