Maya Wants the Ball

Maya stands at the side of a park court. The players are already in the game. Players in red shirts run one way. Players in blue shirts run the other way. The orange ball hits the ground with a loud sound. Maya wants to play. She wants the ball in her hands, and she wants to give it to a teammate before the other team takes it.

Her cousin Ben wears a blue shirt. He is already on the court. Maya must wait until a place is free. A boy in blue slows down and holds his side. He walks off the court and waves at her. Ben looks over and nods. Maya steps onto the court. Her shoes feel stiff. Her mouth is dry. She does not know the names of the other blue players.
