Farah Wanted the Seat Lower

Farah stood beside a bike in the gym and looked at the seat. It was too high for her. When she sat, her toes barely touched the pedals, and the bike felt ready to tip. She wanted to ride for a short time before her class. More than that, she wanted the seat lower, and she wanted to do it without asking the whole room for help.

People moved around her with easy habits. A man ran on a treadmill. Two friends talked by the weights and did not look over. Farah put her hand under the seat and found a round knob. She turned it. Nothing moved. She turned it the other way. The seat stayed high. She pulled up. She pushed down. Her fingers slipped on the metal.

She tried to ride anyway.
