Maya's First Match
Maya stands next to her uncle in the crowd. This is her first football match, and she wants to understand it before the people around her start to shout. If she only follows the ball, she can miss the reason when play stops.
The whistle sounds and the players run. Maya keeps her eyes on the ball. A player sends it toward the side of the field. It looks very close to the white line, then it comes back into the game. People near Maya make a noise. She does not know what they saw.
"Was that out?" she asks.
Her uncle does not look away from the field. "Watch the line, not only the ball," he says. "The ball is out when the whole ball crosses the line. If it has not fully crossed, play can go on."
