The Voice at Embankment

The doors open at Embankment, and Margaret does not get on the train. She stays on the platform on purpose: she wants to hear her husband one more time.

A voice says, "Mind the gap." On the London Underground those words ask you to look down. Between the train and the platform there is a wide space, so people have to step with care.

Years ago Oswald Laurence said these words into a microphone. He was an actor, and he was Margaret's husband. The recording played on the Northern line.

Oswald died in 2007. Margaret still came to Embankment, let a train leave, and waited for the doors to open again.

On 1 November 2012 another man spoke. The station had a new machine, and the old tape would not play in it, so Oswald's voice was gone.

Margaret asked the staff to find the recording.
