Shoes at the Door
Lina stood outside Hana's door with a small box of cookies in both hands. Her room at home was loud in the evenings, and she wanted a quiet table for her books. That morning Hana said, "Come for tea. My grandmother is here. If she likes you, you can use the table by the window." Lina wanted that yes. She smoothed her coat and knocked.
Hana opened the door. Warm air came out, and with it the smell of tea. The hall inside was clean. Shoes sat in a neat row along the wall. A pair of soft slippers waited on the mat. Through the open door Lina could see the window table. Books were stacked at one side. A chair was free. That was the place she wanted.
Lina was so glad to be let in that she stepped straight over the mat.
