The Wet Courtyard

Nora stopped at the top of the library steps and read the sign on the glass. The reading rooms were closed. She already knew that. What she needed was the courtyard behind them, the one with the tree and the old basin. Her sister Elise wanted the wedding photos there, not in a rented hall, and Nora had promised to look before she gave an answer.

She tried the main door. It did not move.

A man in a gray work jacket came around the corner with a bucket and a coil of hose. He saw her hand still on the handle.

"They're on the roof," he said. "Front's shut."

"I don't need a reading room," Nora said. "I need the courtyard. My sister is waiting for a yes, and I will not give it unless I see the light in there."
