The Chipped Bowl
Rosa found the bowl at the bottom of a crate by the back door. Someone had written "sale" on the side in thick pencil. The bowl had a gray chip on the rim and a dark ring inside from soup. Her grandmother had used it on Sundays. Tomorrow the cousins were coming for a last meal in the house, and Rosa wanted that soup in that bowl. A new white one from the shop would be easier. It would also be wrong.
Aunt Lena was wrapping plates in newspaper at the kitchen table. The shelves behind her were already bare.
"That goes in the crate," she said, when she saw the bowl in Rosa's hands. "It is cracked. I am not packing a cracked bowl into the move so it can break in a truck."
"I am not packing it for the move," Rosa said.
