The Red and White Wall

Jo wanted lunch, not another room. Her shoes were tight, and her aunt Helen still would not turn toward the door. Helen had promised a short visit to the Museum of Modern Art, and then something to eat. The meal was the only reason Jo had come.

They passed rooms full of big color and metal shapes. Jo stopped reading the cards. She kept an eye on the way out.

"One room," Helen said. "Find two pictures that aren't the same, and we'll leave."

Jo went because she wanted to win. They stepped into a bright space and she stopped. Campbell's soup cans covered the wall. Red bands, white labels, the same kind of can she knew from a kitchen shelf. She laughed.

"Anyone could paint that."

"Maybe," said Helen. "Look again."

Jo moved closer and kept her hands behind her back.
