The Same Door
Hannah could tell the first half with her eyes shut. A girl leaves home in a dry coat. Her father has gone to sea and has not come back. She follows the road. She comes to a door that shouldn't be there. Then Grandma June always stopped, and Hannah had never heard what was on the other side.
Her bag was already by the stairs. She was going home tomorrow. She sat on the rug anyway, because June liked her there, and she wanted the rest of the story before the bag moved. June had a blanket over her knees, the blue one with a thin spot near the corner. Hall light fell on the bag. Hannah turned her face away from it.
"You know this one," June said.
"I know it up to the door," Hannah said.
