Before the Photograph

Ruth heard the photographer on the stairs, and the poet was still in her coat. The town had called the evening a cultural visit. On the schedule that meant a handshake, a short speech about friendship, and a picture for the council website. Ruth wanted something smaller, and harder to photograph. She wanted Imani to hear the translation of the first poem before a room full of strangers heard it wrong.

"They are ready on the steps," said Marcus, from the press office. He held the schedule like a ticket. "If we lose the light, we lose the picture. You can talk afterwards."

"Afterwards she will be tired and polite," Ruth said. "The first poem has a joke in it. If the English is stiff, the joke dies, and your speech will have to carry the whole evening."
