The Clip of Their Own Street

Elena heard the parent group before she heard Jonah. The phone on the kitchen table kept lighting up with the same short clip: a police car on their street, a voice she could not catch, and a caption that called the road unsafe.

Jonah had been ready for his grandmother. One shoe was on, the other was in his hand, and then the clip was playing again. "We should stay here," he said. "Everyone is saying it."

Elena wanted the walk. His grandmother was expecting them, and the street between the two flats was one Jonah already knew: the bakery, the bus stop, the corner where the same dog always pulled toward the butcher. She did not want a caption he had watched twice to replace a road he used every week.

She played the clip once, all the way through.
