Every year on the 31st of October, many people in the United Kingdom, the United States, and other parts of the world celebrate Halloween. It is a very old holiday with a long history. Today, it is mostly a fun day for children and adults to wear costumes and eat sweets. However, its origins come from an ancient festival called Samhain.

The ancient Celts lived in Ireland and Britain about 2,000 years ago. They believed that on the night before the new year, the worlds of the living and the dead came together. They built large fires and wore costumes made of animal skins to protect themselves from ghosts. Over time, these traditions changed and became what we now call Halloween. The name comes from "All Hallows' Eve," which is the night before a religious holiday called All Saints' Day.

One of the most popular Halloween traditions is dressing up in costumes.
