My First Shift at a Five-a-Side Tournament

Last Saturday, I volunteered at a five-a-side football tournament in our community hall. I did not play. My job was to keep the score and help the matches start on time.

There were six teams and two small courts. The schedule was on the wall. Each team had a colour, so the players were easy to recognise.

I sat at a table between the courts. I had to write the team names, goals, and final scores. A large clock showed the time for each match.

Before every game, the referee checked the players. Then I called the next two teams. While one pair played, another pair waited near the door.

When a team scored, the referee raised one hand. I changed the number on the scoreboard. I watched carefully because both courts were busy.
