Britain for Pennies: Save Money on Travel

Helen wanted to be in Manchester before dinner. She stood at a ticket machine in London and looked at a train for the same day. The price on the screen was more than she wanted to pay for the trip. She did not press buy. An advance ticket, the kind you buy days or weeks before, is often kinder to a purse. She had not bought one. The fast train was about to leave, and she was still on the wrong side of that price.

She called her brother Tom, who was already in Manchester. "Take a coach," he said. "National Express or Megabus. It is slower. You will see fields, not just stations." Helen wanted the train. She wanted Manchester more. She walked to the coach station and took the next coach that had a seat.
