Tres días antes, un frente frío avanzó desde la Patagonia hacia el centro de Argentina. Las temperaturas bajaban y el aire era cada vez más frío. El 8 de julio, los vientos del este llevaron humedad desde el océano.
El día 9, en otros lugares ya nevaba. Mientras en el centro de la ciudad caía lluvia, Morón informó de los primeros copos cerca de las diez de la mañana. En la ciudad, la temperatura era de 4 °C y la nieve todavía no llegaba al suelo.
Con el paso de las horas, la lluvia enfrió el aire. Alrededor de las tres de la tarde, la temperatura bajó a 2,6 °C y la sensación térmica fue de -1,2 °C. Entonces los copos llegaron al suelo sin convertirse en agua.
La nevada duró casi diez horas. La nieve cayó en la ciudad de Buenos Aires y también en zonas de varias provincias argentinas. Durante ese día y la madrugada siguiente, hubo nevadas desde el centro del país hasta lugares del norte.
La ciudad guardaba un recuerdo parecido, pero era muy antiguo. La nevada anterior registrada en Buenos Aires ocurrió en junio de 1918. Entre una nevada y otra pasaron 89 años.
