El lince ibérico vive en la península ibérica. A comienzos de este siglo, su situación era crítica. La Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, conocida como UICN, informó de que en 2001 solo quedaban 62 individuos maduros.

La recuperación no dependió de una sola medida. Se protegió y restauró parte de su hábitat, se aumentó la disponibilidad de conejos y se redujeron algunas muertes causadas por actividades humanas. También fueron criados linces en centros especializados y más de 400 fueron reintroducidos en zonas de España y Portugal desde 2010.

El trabajo debía continuar durante muchos años. Un animal criado por personas puede volver al medio natural, pero necesita alimento, territorio y seguimiento. Si una nueva población queda aislada, tendrá menos opciones de intercambiar genes con otros grupos.

El censo coordinado por el Gobierno de España indicó que en 2023 se contaron 2.021 linces en España y Portugal, incluidos adultos, jóvenes y cachorros. El informe no decía que el problema estuviera resuelto. Mostraba un aumento muy grande respecto a los menos de cien ejemplares contados en 2002.

En junio de 2024, la UICN anunció que el lince ibérico pasaba de la categoría En Peligro a Vulnerable en su Lista Roja. Ese cambio significa que el riesgo se ha reducido según los criterios de la organización. No significa que la especie ya no necesite protección.

Los especialistas quieren que las poblaciones sigan creciendo y que estén conectadas. También es importante que haya suficientes conejos, su presa principal. Si se mantienen las medidas y se vigilan las amenazas, la recuperación puede continuar.

Este caso enseña una lección prudente. Una categoría puede mejorar y una población puede crecer, pero la conservación no termina con una buena noticia. Los datos deben ser revisados, las zonas deben ser vigiladas y las decisiones deben adaptarse a nuevos problemas.
