La ciudad vasca que da nombre a la obra fue bombardeada el 26 de abril de 1937. El hecho ocurrió durante la Guerra Civil española.
Picasso conoció la noticia de los bombardeos por las fotografías publicadas en diarios como L'Humanité. La noticia que recibió le impulsó a pintar la escena.
El proceso que siguió Picasso duró apenas un mes y medio. En ese tiempo realizó unos cincuenta esquemas y bocetos y varias correcciones para el cuadro.
El pabellón donde se presentó al público estaba en París. Allí se mostró Guernica por primera vez en 1937.
Después, el cuadro que viajó por Europa y América llegó a España en 1981. Primero se instaló en el Casón del Buen Retiro de Madrid.
El museo al cual llegó en 1992 fue el Museo Reina Sofía. El traslado que llevó el cuadro al museo ocurrió el 26 de julio de ese año. Allí el museo muestra el cuadro junto a dibujos preparatorios y fotografías de Dora Maar relacionadas con su proceso de creación.
El sitio web que el museo dedica a Guernica reúne una investigación compuesta por alrededor de dos mil documentos. Es un recurso donde el lector puede seguir la historia de la obra.
