El edificio que diseñaron Elena Orte y Guillermo Sevillano, de SUMA Arquitectura, tiene seis plantas. El edificio, de estructura de madera vista, tiene casi 4.000 metros cuadrados. En el interior hay espacios donde la madera queda a la vista.
La biblioteca está especializada en literatura latinoamericana. También tiene un rincón dedicado al dibujante de cómic Francisco Ibáñez. La colección ofrece un punto de entrada para las personas a quienes les interesa la literatura latinoamericana.
El galardón que recibió en 2023 fue el premio de la IFLA a la mejor biblioteca pública del año. La propia IFLA registra a la Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez como ganadora de esa edición.
Para el premio de 2023, el jurado valoró criterios que incluían la calidad arquitectónica, la flexibilidad de los espacios, la sostenibilidad, el aprendizaje y la conexión social. También consideró la relación de cada biblioteca con su entorno y su cultura local.
