Past tense narration, reported speech with що and чи (сказала, що...; спитав, чи...), conditionals with якби and б, the vocative case (Оксано, Степане, Ганнусю), historical vocabulary of Muscovy and Cossack Ukraine (боярин, терем, воєвода, присяга, корогва, жупан), proverbs and idioms (Москва сльозам не вірить, в три погибелі)
This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of Lesya Ukrainka’s dramatic poem The Noblewoman (Бояриня, written 1910, published 1914), retold in simple modern Ukrainian prose. Level B1 suits learners who know the past tense: sentences of about 11 words, about 40% of the text in dialogue and much reported speech. A Cossack officer’s daughter follows her husband, a Ukrainian-born boyar, to 17th-century Moscow; the story shows the customs of the terem and the politics of the Ruin.
