This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of Ivan Franko’s novel Crossed Paths (Перехресні стежки, 1900), retold in simple modern Ukrainian. A young lawyer comes to a provincial town in Austrian Galicia, takes the side of the peasants against the local powers, and meets again the woman he loved as a student, now married to his cruel former tutor. Level B1 suits learners who know the past tense: sentences of about 12 words, more than a third of the text in dialogue, 14 short chapters. You will learn words of courts and local power, polite forms of address and the language of feelings.
