What you'll learn

Past-tense narration with perfective verbs (вийшов, схопив, кинувся, зблідла), polite address and the vocative (пане меценасе, пане старосто, Регінко, Геню), words of courts and local power (суд, староста, маршалок, віче, вексель, завдаток), comparisons with як (як віск, як в’язень, як молода наречена), reported speech with що, and reflexive verbs in -ся (засміявся, зупинився, повернулася)

This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of Ivan Franko’s novel Crossed Paths (Перехресні стежки, 1900), retold in simple modern Ukrainian. A young lawyer comes to a provincial town in Austrian Galicia, takes the side of the peasants against the local powers, and meets again the woman he loved as a student, now married to his cruel former tutor. Level B1 suits learners who know the past tense: sentences of about 12 words, more than a third of the text in dialogue, 14 short chapters. You will learn words of courts and local power, polite forms of address and the language of feelings.
