Past-tense narration with perfective verbs (приїхав, склав, порвав, збудився), reported speech with що and чи (сказав, що…; спитав, чи…), words of 1920s Kyiv and its money (червінець, карбованець, візник, трамвай, френч, крамниця), places of the city (Хрещатик, Поділ, Дніпро, Липки), reflexive verbs in -ся (засміявся, злякався, посварилися), and comparisons with як and ніби (як худобу, ніби крізь скло)
This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of Valerian Pidmohylny’s novel The City (Місто, 1928), retold in simple modern Ukrainian. In 1920s Kyiv, Stepan Radchenko, a young man from the village, comes to study, lodges with a fishmonger’s family, becomes the lover of his landlady and turns from a student into a writer, while the city gives him money, women and a name. Level B1 suits learners who know the past tense: sentences of about 11 words, almost all speech given as reported speech, 14 short chapters. You will learn words of 1920s city life and the patterns of reported speech.
