What you'll learn

Present-tense narration in the first person (кажу, питаю, йду, дивлюся), reported speech with що and чи (каже, що…; питає, чи…), comparisons with за and ніж (вищий за нього, рідніша, ніж Шапочка), words of feelings and conscience (туга, сором, жаль, чесність, сумління), city words of old Kyiv (візник, двірник, гімназія, кватирка, циліндр), and comparisons with як and ніби (як у качки, ніби її поранили)

This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of Volodymyr Vynnychenko’s novel Notes of a Snub-Nosed Mephistopheles (Записки Кирпатого Мефістофеля, 1917), retold in simple modern Ukrainian. In Kyiv before the First World War, the lawyer Yakiv Mykhailiuk, a former revolutionary who now lives for cards and his own ironic philosophy, cannot learn whether his friend’s son Andriiko is his child, begins an affair with the lonely Klavdia Petrivna and falls for a young singer he calls the White Cap. Level B1 suits learners who are at home with the present tense and reported speech: sentences of about 11 words, 14 short chapters, little direct dialogue. You will learn the language of feelings and moral choices and the city words of old Kyiv.
