What you'll learn

Short sentences carried by dialogue against dense, image-laden description, personified nature and coined verbs (піскуватилась, перетінюється), village speech (ти-б, нехай-би, хліборобив), institutions of the 1920s (ДПУ, комнезам, профквиток, міліціонери, кооператив), Russian-tinged speech of officials and townspeople (приказ, розговарювать, конєшно, Можна-с) and city slang (шпана, братва), 1921 spelling (инший, иноді, инколи, що-ж, вартости, замісць, кешеня, лямпа)

This article contains the complete text of Vasyl Vrazhlyvyi’s book The Land (Kharkiv, Knyhospilka, 1925): eight stories from «Земля», about a student arrested at a railway station who escapes into the night, to «Темрява», about a night raid on a rich farmer’s house, including «В ярах», «Роздоріжжя», «Паштетня», «Ліс», «Вовчі Байраки» and «На станції». They show Ukraine in the hungry early 1920s: landless peasants, hired farmhands, railway watchmen, beggars on a city rubbish dump, the old masters reinventing themselves under the New Economic Policy. Level C1 suits readers who can follow dense, image-laden description and village and city speech in Ukrainian. You will learn the rural and institutional vocabulary of the 1920s and how the spelling of 1921 differs from today’s.
