Animals live in many different places around the world. These places are called habitats. Each habitat has specific conditions like temperature, water, and food. Animals adapt to their habitats to survive. Adaptation means changing to fit the environment better over time.

Forests are one type of habitat. Many animals live in forests, including birds, squirrels, deer, and bears. Forests have many trees and plants. Animals in forests find food like nuts, berries, and leaves. They also find shelter in tree holes or under bushes. Some forest animals change color with seasons to hide from predators.

The ocean is another important habitat. Fish, whales, dolphins, and sharks live in the ocean. The ocean is salty and very deep. Ocean animals have special features to help them swim and breathe underwater. Fish have gills to get oxygen from water. Whales must come to the surface to breathe air. The ocean provides different food sources for each animal.

Deserts are very dry habitats with little rain. Animals that live in deserts must handle extreme heat during the day and cold at night. Camels, snakes, and lizards are common desert animals. They have adapted to conserve water. Camels can go long periods without drinking. Many desert animals are active at night when it is cooler.

Polar regions are extremely cold habitats near the North and South Poles. Polar bears, penguins, and seals live in these areas. These animals have thick fur or fat layers to stay warm. Polar bears have white fur to blend with snow. Penguins huddle together in groups to share body heat. Food in polar regions can be scarce, so animals must be good hunters.

Grasslands are open habitats with mostly grass and few trees. Lions, zebras, elephants, and antelopes live in grasslands. There is plenty of grass for herbivores to eat. Predators like lions hunt the herbivores. Grasslands have wet and dry seasons. Animals migrate or move to find water and food during dry times.

Mountains are habitats with high elevation and steep slopes. Mountain goats, eagles, and snow leopards live in mountains. The air is thinner at high altitudes. Mountain animals have strong legs for climbing and special lungs for breathing thin air. They also have thick fur for cold temperatures at high elevations.

Freshwater habitats include rivers, lakes, and ponds. Fish, frogs, beavers, and ducks live in freshwater. These habitats provide drinking water for many land animals too. Freshwater animals must handle changing water levels and currents. Beavers build dams to create safe homes in rivers.

Wetlands are habitats where water covers the soil for most of the year. Birds, insects, and many fish live in wetlands. Wetlands are important because they filter water and prevent floods. Many birds stop in wetlands during migration to rest and eat. These habitats are like nurseries for young fish.

Human activities can change animal habitats. Building cities, farming, and pollution can destroy habitats. When habitats change or disappear, animals may lose their homes. Conservation helps protect animal habitats. People create national parks and protected areas to keep habitats safe for animals.
