Sharing travel memories with adventurous companions reveals how spontaneous road journeys often exceed the most carefully crafted initial itineraries . Yesterday evening , Oliver and I sat in my garden with maps and photo albums , reminiscing about our two - week driving adventure along the Atlantic coastline of Scotland . As we turned the colorful pages , we laughed at the unpredictable situations that had unfolded along the winding coastal roads . Before setting out from Glasgow on that rainy Monday morning , we had prepared our expedition with great enthusiasm . We had packed waterproof tents , warm woollen sweaters , and heavy hiking boots into the boot of our station wagon . Oliver had downloaded detailed offline topographic maps onto his tablet because cellular service was notoriously unreliable in the remote Highlands . We had also booked three nights at a historic lighthouse cottage , eager to watch ocean waves crash against sea stacks below . However , the reality of the Scottish wilderness soon challenged our neat arrangements . On the fourth afternoon , after we had hiked fifteen miles across windswept coastal headlands , dense sea fog rolled in from the Minch . We arrived at our intended wilderness campsite only to discover that torrential rains had flooded the ground completely . Thankfully , an elderly crofter welcomed us into his barn , where we dried our wet jackets near a wood - burning peat stove and shared hot oatcakes . Unexpected weather disruptions often create the most endearing and authentic memories of any outdoor holiday . Flexibility and cheerful humor turn ruined camping plans into unforgettable heartwarming hospitality . Have you ever taken a road trip or wilderness journey where weather disrupted your plans ? What supplies had you packed before you encountered unexpected challenges on the road ?
