Reaching a height of 828 metres , the Burj Khalifa in Dubai stands as the tallest structure ever built by humanity . Constructing a building of this magnitude presented unprecedented engineering challenges . Chief among these was managing the immense forces exerted by high - altitude winds . To prevent the tower from swaying dangerously , architects did not rely on a traditional rectangular framework . What they implemented instead was a Y - shaped floor plan , known as a buttressed core . This design significantly reduces the impact of wind vortices that typically build up around tall structures . The structural foundation alone required a massive volume of material to ensure stability in the desert sand . Engineers drove 192 concrete and steel piles more than 50 metres deep into the earth . It was this subterranean anchor that provided the necessary support for the half - million tonnes of building above . Pouring concrete at such extreme heights introduced another logistical hurdle . Because temperatures in Dubai regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius , the mixture would set before reaching the upper floors . Rarely in modern construction do teams pump concrete vertically to a height of 600 metres . To solve the temperature issue , the construction crews ought to have worked at night , and indeed they did . They mixed the concrete with ice and pumped it during the cooler evening hours . Without this adaptation , the structural integrity of the upper tiers would have been severely compromised . The exterior cladding of the tower was designed to reflect the intense desert sun . Over 26 , 000 individually cut glass panels were installed , requiring a dedicated team of specialists . Few dared to estimate how long cleaning those windows would take without automated washing tracks . Today , the skyscraper houses residential apartments , corporate suites , and observation decks . It serves as the centrepiece of downtown Dubai and a monument to structural engineering . Have you ever visited an observation deck in a supertall skyscraper ? How do you feel about buildings that pierce the clouds ?
