When John A . Roebling designed a suspension bridge to connect Manhattan and Brooklyn , few engineers dared to believe such a colossal structure could span the East River . Following his sudden death from tetanus in 1869 , his son Washington Roebling took over the project . What the younger Roebling inherited was not merely a set of ambitious blueprints , but a monumental engineering crisis . To secure the bridge's massive stone towers , workers had to descend into watertight wooden caissons sunk deep into the riverbed . Inside these pressurised chambers , the air was thick , hot , and dangerous . Rarely had labourers faced such punishing conditions . Many suffered from ' caisson disease ' , a poorly understood decompression sickness that caused excruciating joint pain and paralysis . Washington Roebling himself spent countless hours in the caissons , a decision that would permanently alter his life . By 1872 , the disease had left him bedridden , partially blind , and too weak to speak . One might have expected him to resign , and perhaps a lesser engineer would have done so . Yet Roebling refused to abandon the project . It was his wife , Emily Warren Roebling , who ultimately saved the bridge . She ought to be remembered as its true co - chief engineer . Having taught herself higher mathematics , catenary curves , and materials science , Emily became her husband's indispensable liaison . Not only did she relay his written instructions to the foremen , but she also negotiated with politicians and competing steel manufacturers . When the Brooklyn Bridge finally opened to the public in 1883 , it stood as a triumph of perseverance over catastrophic adversity . Emily Roebling was granted the honour of being the first person to ride across it , carrying a rooster as a symbol of victory . Have you ever had to step in and complete a complex project when the original leader could no longer continue ? What skills do you think are most essential when taking over someone else's unfinished work ?
