Eli had to reach a cafe before his sister left for work . He did not know the streets around it . He opened Google Maps and typed the name of the cafe . The straight road showed red . Maps watches the traffic , the cars already moving slowly , and it can offer another way when a road is too busy . A blue line bent through side streets . Eli wanted the same cafe . He did not want to stand among cars he could not see from his corner , so he followed the blue line . The screen showed each turn . He did not need the name of every road . People call this kind of choosing artificial intelligence . The program uses what it knows about busy roads , and then it picks a line . It does not know why you are going . It only knows which streets are heavy now . He almost left the blue line . A wider road opened in front of him , and it looked like the direct way . He stopped because the screen told him to turn . Down that wide road the cars were packed and still . From the corner he could see the problem the map had shown in red . The program was right about those cars . It still did not know his sister's name . Halfway along , his phone buzzed . The new mail was not from his sister . It promised a prize he had never entered . Gmail had already moved it out of the main inbox . Her note was still there : she had a table by the window , and she could not stay long . Gmail sorts with the same broad idea . It has learned what junk letters look like , so a prize from a stranger often goes to one side , and a person writing to you stays in front . Eli read her line and walked faster . From the end of the street he saw the window . She was still in the chair , coat already on . He sat down , and the phone went into his pocket , face down . They had time for one coffee . The map had chosen the street . The inbox had kept her letter where he could see it . Neither program knew her name .
