Lena's phone case cracked on the bus . A corner split open , and the phone slipped in her bag . She wanted a new case before the end of the day , and she wanted her name on it . A shop near her house sold plain cases . None of them carried her name . She already had a digital model on her laptop . A friend made it for her exact phone and raised the letters of her name on the back of the model . Lena took the laptop to the workshop at her college . A 3D printer stood on a metal table . She opened the file and looked at the model on the screen . The holes for the camera and the buttons sat where her phone needed them . A program sliced the model into many thin layers . Each layer was one flat shape . The bottom layer was the base of the case . The layers above it made the walls , the edge around the screen , and the letters . Lena looked through the list , sent the file to the printer , and pressed start . This machine does not put ink on paper . It builds a solid object , one layer at a time . Beside it sat a reel of plastic filament , a long thread of plastic . The printer heated the filament until it melted , then pushed the melted plastic through a small nozzle . The nozzle drew the first layer on a flat bed . The plastic cooled and hardened . Then the nozzle rose a little and drew the next layer on top of that one . Lena stayed by the table . The outline of the case appeared . Then the sides began to grow . The printer moved slowly and followed the path from the sliced file . She watched the letters of her name begin as low lines and turn into shapes she could read . Her case was small , so she did not have to return the next morning . A large object , or one with fine detail , can take many hours . This print finished while the workshop lights were still on . The printer stopped . The case rested on the bed , solid , and still a little warm along the edge . She waited until the plastic was cool , then lifted the case off the bed . She pressed her phone in . The camera sat in its hole . The buttons still moved . The old cracked case stayed in her bag . The new case held the phone , and her name was part of the same plastic , built with the walls , layer after layer . She put the phone in her coat pocket . The split corner was gone . That was what she had wanted on the bus .
