Paul is tired . His bus was late , and he wants a bed in this city tonight . He has a reservation at a hotel near the station . He pulls his bag into a bright hall and walks to the reception . A receptionist looks up and smiles . Paul says his name . He puts his passport and the reservation on the desk . The paper shows his name and the kind of room . It does not show a bed he can touch yet . He wants that part to happen soon . The receptionist looks at the computer . For a moment Paul thinks the booking is lost . Then she nods . She finds his name . She asks for a credit card , and she says he can pay when he leaves . Paul gives her the card . He signs a short form . His hand is slow because he is tired , but the form is not long . The receptionist gives the card back . Then she gives him a key card and says a room number . She also says there are towels in the bathroom . Paul thanks her and puts the key card in his pocket with care . He does not want to lose the one thing that opens the door . The elevator takes him up . The hall on his floor is quiet . He finds the door and holds the key card against it . Nothing happens . He tries again , the other way . The door stays shut . Paul stands with his bag and looks at the number on the door , then at the number in his head . They are the same . The card is the problem , not the room . He does not want to walk back down . He also does not want to sleep in the hall . So he goes back to the reception . The receptionist listens . She does not laugh . She makes a new key card and walks to the elevator with him . At the door she tries the new card . The lock clicks . The door opens . Inside there is a bed , a bathroom , and a window over the street . Paul sees towels on a shelf . He puts his bag down . The receptionist says good night and leaves the new card in his hand . Paul sits on the bed . The first card is still in his pocket , and it does not work . The second card works . He takes off his shoes . The city can wait until morning . The room is his for the night .
