I got home late , and the phone rang before I put my bag down . It was my friend Nora . She had a short time before work , and she wanted the whole trip . I wanted her to stay on the line . One city was still in my head , and I did not want to spend that time on a list of names . " Start at the beginning , " she said . I started in Rome . I walked through old streets and stood near ancient ruins . The stone felt warm in the sun . I told her about a huge old building with arches , the Colosseum , and about churches with high ceilings . That night I ate pizza . It was simple , hot , and very good . I felt excited , and I also felt tired from so much walking . Nora laughed . " That sounds like you , " she said . " You still have Florence . Go on . " Florence was next . In the old centre , the buildings looked older than the buildings on my street at home . I stood outside a great church and looked up at its red dome until my neck hurt . For lunch I wanted pasta , so I chose a small restaurant with no photos of food in the window . A man at the next table helped me when I could not read the menu . I learned a few useful words , and I used them again the next day . The weather was warmer than I expected , so I drank water and walked slowly between the churches . Nora was quiet . Then she said , " And Venice ? You always leave that part for last . " She was right . That was the part I wanted her to hear . In Venice I walked . Cars do not drive through the old city , and boats moved on the canals . I crossed small bridges and got lost . Then I found the same bridge again , and I was glad to see it . At a market , a woman pointed the way with her whole hand . I said a few words in Italian . She smiled and answered slowly , so I could follow . Venice felt different from Rome and from Florence , because I walked beside water , not beside traffic . I told Nora that . She said , " Say it again . I want to hear it once more . " I said it again , more slowly . Then her bus came , and she had to go . I stood in the kitchen with my bag still by the door . The call was short . Venice was no longer only in my head . Nora had it too .
