Jonah wants to reach Ana before her train leaves . She is waiting on the far side of the city , and her house key is still in his pocket . A taxi would be easy , but he cannot read the fare on the sign , and he does not want an argument . The metro entrance is across the square . He walks toward it . Last night his host wrote two rules on a card . Buy the ticket before you board . Stamp it at the machine by the gate . Jonah reads the card twice . At the machine he pays with his card and takes one ticket , not a day pass . He only needs this ride . He stamps the ticket , watches the machine mark it , and puts it in his front pocket . If someone checks tickets , he wants to find it fast . Google Maps shows the way : one train , a change , then another train . He takes a photo of the screen , because the battery is already weak . On the platform he keeps his bag against his chest . He would rather hold it than hang it on his back in a crowd . When the train comes , he steps on and stays near the door so he can see the station names . At the change , the phone goes dark . The photo goes with it . The signs are in a language he does not know , and for a moment the whole station feels too big . Then he pulls out Ana's paper . She wrote the station name in large letters that morning . He shows it to a woman who works there . She points to a platform and writes a 2 beside the name . Two stops . He thanks her and does not pretend he understood every word . On the next train he gives his seat to an older man and counts the stops on his fingers . A bus on the road beside the tracks is stuck in traffic . His train is not . He gets off at the second stop and checks the wall against Ana's paper . The letters match . She is by the gate , looking at the clock and then at him . He puts the key in her hand . Ana gets on her train . Jonah stays by the gate with the marked ticket in his pocket , and that is enough .
