Mara wanted a winter , not a long weekend . Her client was in another country , the draft was still open , and the work lived on her laptop . A tourist entry would run out before the project did . The other new habits of travel she treated as optional . She could buy a fare that let her move the date , and she wanted that , because a ticket that cannot bend had failed her before . A mobile boarding pass was already how she flew . None of those conveniences answered the question on the table . A changeable seat does not give you the right to remain after the stamp runs out . She closed the airline tab . A friend sent a piece claiming the whole business of travel had been permanently remade : cleaner air in every terminal , flexible terms in every company , domestic trips replacing foreign ones . Mara did not argue with the mood . She argued with the reach . Some airports are stricter about cleaning than they used to be . Some countries wrote visas for people who work online . Neither fact is a rule about every hotel and every border . Her file was one country and one winter . She attached the contract , the insurance certificate , and the address of a room she could cancel if the answer was no . In the box that asked what she would do all day , she wrote the name of the project and nothing heroic . Then she sent the client a shorter note than the one she had drafted . She would know Tallinn when Estonia answered . Until then the work stayed on the laptop , and so did she .
