Omar came back from the market and stopped in the doorway . The new counter was already inside the cafe , pushed tight against the back wall . He had wanted that . It was the first line on his list , and he still hoped to serve lunch tomorrow . Leila was on her knees with a brush in her hand and paint on her wrist . She was not painting . " I cannot reach the wall , " she said . " You told the driver to bring the counter in while I was out buying tape . " Omar set his bags down . At the kitchen table the night before , the order had looked simple . The counter was the heavy piece , the one he was afraid would come late , so he had put it first . The paint was only a line under it . In the room , the counter covered the exact patch that every customer would look at . " We can paint around it , " he said . " We can , " Leila said . " Then tomorrow you will see a bare strip behind the cups , and you will ask me to fix it when the counter is full . " He wanted to leave it where it was . The driver had already left . If they moved the counter now , they would spend the rest of the afternoon on a job he had thought was finished . There was nobody else to lift it . Leila waited . She did not pick up the brush . Omar took one end of the counter . She took the other . They walked it into the middle of the room , then a little farther , until she could stand between the wood and the wall . The brush reached the whole patch . She did not thank him . She started to paint . Omar carried the chairs into the kitchen so they would not touch the wet wall . He turned his list over . On the clean side he wrote the order he could see : paint while the wall is empty , bring the counter in when the paint is dry , then the chairs . He left the paper on the counter , out in the middle of the room , so the next person would read it before pushing anything back against that wall .
