Noor heard the printer before she saw Ellis . He came in with a roll of paper under his arm and the look of a man who has already decided . Outside , the street was bright and empty . On the side table , the school model still had a stair that stopped short of the landing . She wanted that stair to meet . The school job had waited through every other offer they took to keep busy . If this new sheet became the winter , the landing would still be wrong when the children needed the door . Ellis spread the drawing on her desk . A shop front , a lot of glass , a clean strip where a sign could go . The kind of work they could finish without a fight . " They want us soon , " he said . " The school can sit . Nothing has started on site . " " That is how it sat last time , " Noor said . " Last time we had work we could live on , " Ellis said . He did not raise his voice . " This is a plan . A real one . We can start it this week , while the school people are still thinking . " Noor looked at the glass . The drawing was competent . It was also a habit : take the quick front , and keep the school as a story they told about the studio . She put her palm on the paper . " The plan is the stair , " she said . " If we take the shop , we will talk about the school as if it is still ours . It will not be . We will be people who fit signs into glass . " Ellis gave a short laugh . " You cannot pay the landlord with a landing . " " I know , " she said . " I am not asking you to like it . I am telling you which drawing stays on the desk . " She slid the roll back until it touched his wrist . For a second she thought he would open it again and make her the difficult one . He did not . He held the paper against his coat , angry in a quiet way , and looked at the model as if it had wasted his morning on purpose . " The landing is still wrong , " he said . " Then that is the work , " Noor said . He hung his coat on her hook . She let him . He pulled a chair to the model , took the ruler from the jar , and measured the gap without asking her to watch . The printer had gone quiet . Noor did not thank him , and she did not describe the year she wanted . The ruler knocked once against the wood .
