Mrs Pell put her phone on Hugo's desk with the screen still lit . A message from her nephew sat there , full of excitement and almost no detail . " He says we have to move today , " she said . " If I wait , I miss it . I want you to put the money in . " Hugo wanted her to leave with the money still somewhere she could explain . He had watched other people arrive like this , bright with someone else's certainty , and he had learned not to borrow it . He turned the phone face down . " Tell me what the company does , " he said . " Not his words . Yours . " She blinked . " They are the ones everyone is talking about . He showed me a chart in a cafe . The line went up . He said his friend already got in . " " That is what he saw , " Hugo said . " I asked what they do . Do they make something , move something , lend something ? " She looked at the phone , screen down , as if it might answer . The office was quiet . A printer in the next room started and stopped . She folded her hands , then opened them . " I should not have to pass a test to use my own money , " she said . " You do not , " Hugo said . " You can sign . I am asking because once the form is in , I cannot turn his message into a fact for you . If the line on his chart goes the other way , you will still own whatever this is . I need you to know what that is . " She stared at the form . Her name was already at the top , in her handwriting , from when she thought the hard part was over . The rest of the page was blank . " He will be furious , " she said . " Then he can sit here and tell me what they sell , " Hugo said . " I will listen . " Mrs Pell picked up the phone . For a moment Hugo thought she would read the message aloud and call that an answer . She did not . She stood , the form in one hand , and walked to the corridor where the signal was better . He heard her voice , lower than it had been at his desk . " He asked what they make , " she said . " I do not know . Do you ? " Hugo could not hear the nephew . He heard her breathe out . Then nothing . She did not come back to the chair . When he went to the corridor , she was gone , and the form was on the ledge by the window , still blank under her name . He left it there . He did not add a note .
