Leila wanted the new till on before the lunch rush . The trainer had already gone . The screen was bright , the prices were in it , and the card machine had said yes on the first try . She had told the owner the old pad could go in a drawer . It looked like a habit the shop had outgrown . Farid came through for the morning handover and did not look at the screen . He looked at the pad by the grinder , pencil down the margin . " Where did Ada's line go ? " Ada came most mornings and did not order out loud if the person behind the counter already knew . No syrup . She would drink the wrong cup rather than make a small speech about it , and then she would stay away for a stretch . The pad carried that . The new till had her name , if you searched , and a list of what she had paid . It did not have the line about the syrup . She could picture the drawer already . No pencil dust , no pad with a curled corner , a counter that matched the photo the trainer had left on the fridge . That clean counter was the reason she wanted this finished before lunch . It mattered less the moment Farid said the name . Leila had been calling that a detail for a quieter day . Farid kept his finger on the paper . The queue would not wait while he learned the buttons and also tried to remember who would not drink a sweet cup . One wrong drink , and Ada would not help him correct it . She would just be gone for that stretch , and the till would have no idea why . She opened Ada's page . Visits . Payments . A blank where a note would sit . The till knew the price of the cup . It did not know the person holding it . An hour ago the pad had looked like clutter she was finally brave enough to throw out . With Farid's hand on it , it was the only place the shop still kept a fact the customer would not repeat . " It stays , " she said . She turned the new till toward the counter so the prices faced the queue , and she slid the pad in beside the screen , pencil on top .
