Lena wanted one glass of water for her son , Sam , before school . His bag was by the door , the kitchen was already warm , and he was holding out his cup . She turned on the tap . The first water came out light brown . It was not the water she wanted him to drink . She had seen this tap do the same thing on other mornings . She did not know why . She knew what mattered in her kitchen . She filled a cup only after the water looked clear . Brown water went into the sink . Sam pushed the cup closer . " I am thirsty now . " " I know , " she said . " This first water is for the sink . Your water comes next . " He frowned , because a thirsty child does not like to wait . Lena kept her hand on the tap . She could fill the cup at once and make him quiet . She wanted him quiet , and she wanted him ready for the door . She wanted a clear glass more than she wanted that quiet . The water ran into the sink and went away . Sam watched it as if she was throwing away the drink he had asked for . She told him the rule of their house . They drank from the kitchen tap , and only when the water had no brown left in it . They used that same clear water for cooking and for the bottle he carried to school . " Can I drink from the bathroom tap ? " he asked . " No , " she said . " That tap is for hands and for teeth . In this home , drinking water comes from here , after it runs clear . " Outside , a bus stopped at the corner . Sam looked toward the door . Lena did not look with him . If she turned the tap off now , the cup would look full , and the water would still look brown . The brown grew lighter . The stream went pale , and then it became the clear water she used every day . She let it run a little longer , because a little brown sometimes stayed if she hurried . When she could see the metal of the sink through the water , she filled his cup . Sam drank . He put the cup down and picked up his bag . He did not talk about the wait . He had his water , and that was enough for him . Lena turned the tap off . A thin brown line sat near the drain . The cup on the counter was clear . She wiped the line away and heard him open the door .
