Nina wanted the front step clear before the rain . Friends were coming later , and the step was the only way to the door . When she came up from the street , a small nest sat on the top step , right where a shoe lands . Twigs , dry grass , and a soft gray center . She stopped with her key in her hand . She looked along the rail and up at the roof . No bird . The nest looked finished and quiet , something she could lift and set in a safer place . Rain was already in the air . If she left the nest there , a person might step on it . If she moved it under the roof , it might stay dry . She put her bag inside and came back with a low box from the hall . She knelt on the lower step and slid one hand toward the nest . Then she heard a thin sound , the same sound again and again . It did not come from the street . It came from the nest . She pulled her hand back and stayed still . A small brown bird landed on the rail . It watched her with its head tipped to one side . Nina did not stand . She did not speak . The bird hopped once and dropped into the nest , and the thin sound stopped . Nina stayed on one knee until her leg hurt . The bird did not fly . She saw the choice clearly now . She could not move the nest . She also could not leave it where a tired foot would find it after dark . She set the box down , stood up slowly , and went inside . She came out with the old doormat and a heavy flower pot . She laid the mat on the step below , the place where people stop , and she turned the pot so its leaves made a small wall beside the nest . She was not sure the rain would miss the twigs . She was sure her hands should stay off them . She moved her shoes to the side of the door and stuck a short note on the inside of the glass : step wide , nest on the top . The first drops hit the pot and the rail . The nest sat against the back of the step , under the edge of the roof , and only a little water reached it . The bird stayed low . Nina wanted to watch until the rain was gone , but a person standing there only made the bird wait . She turned the porch light off , closed the door without a bang , and left the step to the bird .
