Ellen wanted the shed door shut before the wind put it into the bicycle . She had left the bike just inside , and the door was already swinging that way . She caught the wood with both hands . The wind leaned on the other side and would not let the gap close . The path was loud . A plastic bucket rolled , touched her shoe , and stopped . She needed a heavy thing for the bottom of the door , and both hands were busy holding it . If she let go , the door would swing again . She could see the bicycle wheel , close to the edge , bright against the dark inside the shed . Her fingers were already sore . The wind was not one steady push . It came , eased , and came again , and each time the door felt heavier . Ellen could hold it . She could not hold it and bend down at the same time . A loose brick sat by the step . It was there for days when the latch did not hold . It lay near her left foot , easy to see and hard to reach while her hands stayed on the door . Ellen kept her eyes on the wheel . She did not have another weight on the path . The wind jumped , and the door knocked hard against her palms . She turned her shoulder into the wood and let her right hand drop . For a short moment the door shoved her hip . She got her fingers onto the brick . It was rough , and colder than the air . She lifted it to the bottom of the door and held it there with her knee , then put her hand back on the wood . The door rested on the brick and stayed . The latch was still open , up on the frame , knocking the plate whenever the wind hit . Ellen kept one palm flat and reached with the other hand . The latch was stiff . She lifted it , set it down into the hook , and felt the hook take the pull . The door banged in its frame . It did not swing . She left the bicycle where it was . The wheel was clear of the wood , and the path was a worse place for it than the shed . She took her hands off the door and walked to the house with her hair across her mouth .
