Amir wanted the last corner of the ceiling white before the light went . The hall smelled of paint . A sheet covered the piano . His sister Noor was washing brushes in a bucket by the door , and the water had gone the color of milk . " Leave it , " she said . " We can finish in the morning . " Amir shook his head . His neck hurt from looking up , and his right shoulder had a deep , hot ache . He knew that ache . It came when he reached too far , and it grew if he pretended it was nothing . He still wanted the clean corner . A bare patch would show when people walked in , and he hated the thought of it . He moved the ladder . It wobbled , then stood firm . He climbed with the brush in his left hand , because the right one felt slow . His eyes stung . Up close , the missed patch was a dull block in the fresh white . It was small . That was why it tempted him . It looked like a job he could finish with one careful reach . He stretched . The ache turned sharp . His fingers opened , the brush tapped a rung , and it fell . It left a white splash on the wooden floor . Noor looked up . " Get down , " she said . She did not shout . Amir stayed on the ladder for a moment . Pain beat in his shoulder . The corner was still bare . He thought of a smooth white ceiling . He also thought of the morning , when the stacked chairs had to come down . He wanted the paint done . He wanted his arm to lift a chair . He could not have both in the same hour . He climbed down . His legs were steady . Only his shoulder refused , and that made him angry , because the rest of him was willing . Noor handed him a rag . He wiped the splash . It faded to a pale smear . Above them , the bare patch did not change . They sat on the piano bench , on top of the sheet , because every chair was in a stack . Amir held his elbow close to his ribs . The ache stayed , but it stopped getting worse . Noor passed him water and looked at the ceiling . " It will still be there , " she said . Amir looked at the patch , then at his right hand , held tight against his side . " Tomorrow , " he said . The brush stayed on the floor between them .
