Hana had promised her cousin . Samir was staying the night , and he wanted the moon . Not a picture of it . The real one , from the roof , because the lamps on their street turned the sky above his window into a muddy haze . They climbed the last stairs with a blanket over Hana's arm . The roof door stuck , then gave . Outside , the roof was brighter than she had hoped . A security light poured white across the tiles and hummed . Under that light the sky looked empty . Samir tipped his head back , blinked hard , and looked at her as if she had hidden the moon in a pocket . " It is up here , " she said . " The light is the problem , not the sky . " She wanted him to see it before he decided the promise was empty . She also wanted to be right . At dinner she had talked about the roof as if the night belonged to her . Now her face felt hot , and the tiles glared . They walked along the edge , away from the lamp . A water tank stood in the glare and cut a shadow behind it . In that shadow the tiles were only grey , and the sky opened a little . A few stars showed , small and unsteady . Samir dropped his voice , as if a shout could push them away . Hana let him believe that . She did not laugh . The moon was not overhead . It sat low , in the gap between a tall block of flats and the dark shape of the hill . It was not a full circle . It was a bright curve . It looked large in that gap , and it made the roof feel small . " There , " Hana said , and she pointed with her whole arm so he could follow the line . Samir stared . He pulled the blanket tight around his shoulders . " It has a bite out of it , " he said . " Yes , " said Hana . A car passed in the street below . Its lights ran along the wall and then were gone . The security lamp kept humming on the far side of the tank . Samir sat on the blanket with his face turned to the gap . Hana sat beside him . He looked at her only once , to make sure she was watching the same bright curve .
