Priya needed the box of plates in the hall kitchen before people started to arrive . It sat on the carpet by the door , heavy and square . Past the carpet , the hall floor was smooth tile , and the kitchen counter was only a short walk from there . She put both hands on the box and pushed . Her shoes slipped a little on the carpet . The box did not move . " Again , " she said , mostly to herself . She set her shoulder against the side and pushed lower . The carpet held the bottom of the box . She could feel it stick and rub . A straight push was not enough , and pulling on the top only tipped it . Omar came in with a long wooden board under his arm . He had brought the board for the step outside , because the step was high and the box had no wheels . He looked at Priya , then at the carpet . " You are fighting the carpet , " he said . " Put it on this . " Priya did not want a talk about pushes and pulls . She wanted the plates safe on the counter . They laid the board flat , one half on the carpet and the other half on the tile . Omar stood on the tile end so the board would not slide away . Priya tipped the box until one corner was on the wood . Then they moved it , a little at a time , until the whole box sat on the board . The box was just as heavy as before . Priya pushed , and this time it went . The board left the carpet and ran onto the tile , quicker than she was ready for . The kitchen table stood in the way , and its legs were thin . " Stop , " Omar said . There was no time for a careful plan . Priya dropped to one knee and pressed her shoe against the end of the board . The board stopped . The box rocked once and stayed . Inside it , a plate gave a small click , and then the box was quiet . They got up . Priya's hands were warm from the cardboard . She put them on the box again , lighter now , and moved it the rest of the way to the counter . Omar picked up the board and turned toward the door , ready for the step and the next load . Priya opened the box , saw the plates sitting whole , and closed it again . That was the thing she had wanted , and she had it .
