Leah was still in her coat when Sam turned the clipboard around . The shared spectrometer had one free hour before the other group took it back , and she wanted her name on that line . He wanted something duller first . He would not write her in until she said , in a sentence a tired person could repeat , what she would do if the screen stayed empty . The other group's tape was still on the sample tray . Their run had overrun , and the room smelled faintly of warm electronics . Leah had drawn a peak on the board , a clean hump , and beside it a question mark she had almost rubbed away . She wanted the hour because the drawing was now a bet , not a decoration . " The model puts a line there , " she said . " I have checked the steps twice . I want the hour so we can see whether this sample agrees . " " Drawings are easy at this time of night , " Sam said . " Hours on this machine are not . If I give you this one and nothing shows , what do you walk out believing ? " She felt the softer answer rise . The machine is fussy . The sample was tired . A single hour never settles a large question . Any of that might be worth saying tomorrow . Tonight it would also let her keep the hump on the board untouched . Sam waited with the pen uncapped . " If the line is not there , " Leah said , " I do not get to say the model described this case . Either I gave it the wrong conditions , or it is wrong here . I can argue later about which . I cannot go upstairs and tell them we saw the shape we hoped for . We would have seen an absence . That is the result I have to be willing to carry out of the room . " " And if it is there ? " " Then we have one hour that matches the drawing , " she said . " Not a new account of how the world is put together . Not a reason to talk as if the measurement had been waiting for us . A line , in this sample , on this machine . I still want the hour . " Sam wrote her name in the empty slot and stopped . He did not add a note about what nature preferred . Leah left the question mark on the board and went to switch the lamp over the bench on .
