Maya Ellison was the doctor on call , and she wanted one answer she could stand behind before she opened the door . The night nurse had called her because the patient's eyes were open , and his sister was already in the chair , holding his hand as if the question had settled itself . His name was Daniel . He had not answered anyone since he was brought in . Maya knew the shortcut people take in that moment : eyes open , so he is back . She also knew why the shortcut fails . After a severe brain injury , wakefulness and awareness can come apart . A person can open their eyes , even pass through stretches of sleep and waking , and still show no sign of awareness . Ruth looked up as soon as Maya stepped in . " He looked at me , " she said . " Just now . You missed it . " Maya kept her voice low . " Tell me what you saw . " " His eyes moved . Toward my face . Then he blinked . " Ruth pressed her thumb against Daniel's knuckle . " He hears me . I can feel it . " Maya wanted to agree . It would have been the kinder sentence , and it would have been a guess . She took the penlight from her pocket , mostly to give herself a reason to go slowly . She asked Daniel to look at the light . She asked him to look at his sister . She asked him to squeeze her fingers if he could hear her . She waited longer than felt kind . His eyes stayed open . They did not follow . His hand stayed loose . " I believe you saw a movement , " Maya said . " I cannot treat one movement as an answer . If he can do it again , when we ask , that is a different fact . Right now I do not have it . " Ruth's mouth tightened . " So you are saying he is gone . " " I am saying I do not know , and his eyes do not decide it . " Maya set the light on the cabinet . " You can talk to him . Nobody in this room can prove he hears nothing . That is not the same as proof that he hears you . In the morning the team will look again for a response we can get more than once . Tonight I will not pretend I already have one . " The monitor kept its small rhythm . Ruth did not argue . She leaned in and told Daniel about the kettle at home , a plain sentence , as if the ward were still a kitchen . Maya rested her hand on the door . She had come down the corridor wanting a sign she could defend to anyone who asked . She walked back up the corridor with the question still open .
