Priya stood in her room with a long blue cloth in both hands . Her friend Meera was getting married that afternoon , and Priya wanted to wear the sari her mother sent from home . The box came yesterday . Priya opened it on the bed , touched the gold border , and smiled . Then she stopped . She did not know how to put a sari on by herself . The clock by the door told her to leave soon . The bus to the hall was not going to wait . Her shoes stood by the wall . Her bag was packed . The sari was still only a cloth . She put one end at her waist and turned in a slow circle , the way her mother did in old photos . The cloth slipped and fell on the rug . Priya picked it up and tried again . The folds in front were too thick . The loose end dropped off her shoulder , and the pin was not in her hand . Her phone lit up . Meera wrote , " Are you close ? " Priya sat on the bed . A black dress from the shop downstairs hung on the chair . It was plain , and it fit her . She could put it on , leave the sari on the bed , and still catch the bus . She held the dress up to the mirror . She looked neat . She did not look like herself . She put the dress down . She wanted her mother's blue at Meera's wedding , not a safe black dress . She went to the next floor and knocked . Mrs Shah opened the door in house shoes . She saw the sari and nodded . " The bus will not wait for perfect folds , " she said . " I know , " Priya said . " It will not stay on me . " Mrs Shah dried her hands and came in . She fixed the cloth at Priya's waist , made the front folds one by one , and set the last part over her shoulder . She put in a few pins and stepped back . " Walk to the door , " she said . Priya walked to the door and back again . The sari stayed . She lifted her hands , and the cloth on her shoulder did not fall . " Thank you , " she said . " Send a photo to your mother , " Mrs Shah said . " She will want to see you in it . " Priya put her shoes on and touched her shoulder , just to check . On the bus she kept that hand close to the cloth . She did not close her eyes . At the hall , Meera was talking to an aunt by the door . She turned , saw Priya , and stopped . She came across the floor and touched the gold border . " That is your mother's blue , " she said .
