Hana reached the school office with Yusuf's bag already packed for a Monday the school had not agreed to . Mrs Adeyemi set a blank placement form between them . The first line asked for the year he had finished . Every page in Hana's folder answered some other question . She wanted one thing . He should start with children his own age , in a room where a teacher would learn his name . If the form could not be given a year , she needed Mrs Adeyemi to take what the folder did have , before a guess put him somewhere he had already left . " We place from this line , " Mrs Adeyemi said , and tapped it . " If there is no year , he sits with the younger group until the papers agree with us . That is the careful choice . " Yusuf studied the floor . On the bus he had been quiet in the way of a boy who has already pictured the wrong desk . Hana opened the last report . It named no year . It named the work : the novel the class had finished , the maths he had gone on with after the break , and a line from his teacher saying he read aloud without being asked . She rested a finger on that line . " This was his class , " she said . " If you need a year and I can only give you a teacher , then use the teacher . " Mrs Adeyemi read it twice . The pen stopped above the blank and stayed there . " A note is not a year . " " It is not , " Hana said . " The younger room is not a fact either . It is a space you would be choosing for him . " She shut the folder . A speech would only argue with an empty line . Yusuf looked up . " We were on the second poetry book . I can say the one about the river , if you need to hear where I got to . " Mrs Adeyemi watched him , then the form . In the margin , not on the line , she wrote : speaks , second poetry book , report attached . She turned the page so Hana could read it . " Monday , with his age group , " she said . " If the work is wrong , the room will show us . I am not going to invent the year . " Yusuf lifted the bag onto his shoulder . Hana thanked her and did not add the speech .
