Nora stood beside the sofa in her brother's living room , her bag still on her shoulder . The kitchen was close . She slept on that sofa night after night , and every morning the television was on , the kettle was loud , and people walked past her feet . She wanted a room with a door she could close . " The small room is free , " her brother said . " It is full of boxes . You can use it , or you can stay on the sofa . " Nora went with him to the end of the hall . He opened the door and waited . The room was small and dusty . Boxes sat on the floor , on a chair , and on the bed . A little light came through the curtain . The air smelled like old paper . She stood in the doorway and listened . On the sofa she heard every cup and every phone . Here the door was thick , and the hall was quiet . The bed was narrow , but it was a real bed , with a pillow and a place for her book . " I want this room , " she said . " I can move the boxes today . I do not want to wait . " Her brother nodded . " They are old books and winter clothes . Put them in the hall . I will look at them later . " They started with the chair . Nora carried the light boxes , and her brother carried the heavy ones . They cleared the chair , and then they cleared the bed . Soon there was a clear space by the window . Dust moved in the light , and Nora wiped her hands on her coat . She opened the window a little . Cool air came in . Outside she saw a brick wall and a thin tree . It was not a fine view . She liked the window , because the street below was quiet . She set her bag on the chair and opened it . She took out a clean shirt , a book , and a small lamp . That lamp came with her from the last place she stayed . There was no table , so she put the lamp on the floor by the bed . She put the shirt on the chair and the book on the pillow . From the hall her brother asked , " Do you want a blanket ? " " Yes , please . The blue one . " He brought the blue blanket and stopped in the doorway . He did not come in . Nora spread the blanket over the bed . The room still looked bare , and the boxes still stood in the hall . She did not mind . " Thank you , " she said . Then she closed the door . The kettle started in the kitchen . Nora sat on the bed with the blue blanket under her hands .
